Hello my friends,
A few of you have reached out recently to ask whether I use any AI tools to curate or write CMMN WLTH.
And the answer is:
Only to enhance the quality of my findings.
Never to reduce the time and attention that goes into the output.
Eventually I’ll compile a comprehensive overview of my research workflow but before I get there I want to introduce you to what is, in my experience, the best AI tool available.
Perplexity AI combines the benefits of a Large Language Model (LLM) like Chat GPT, with a search engine. It’s like Google Search, but it likes to discuss ideas.
Here are 3 things that I think separate it from Chat GPT, Gemini or Copilot:
1. Source Citation
One of the most prominent criticisms of AI is the accuracy of their output. What initially attracted me to Perplexity was it’s transparency. Every answer comes with source citation, enabling you to check the legitimacy of the results.
2. Conversational Workflow
Search engines work when you know the answer you are looking for which means they aren’t ideal for research. Perplexity feels like you’re working 1:1 with a subject matter expert. The Pro version ($20 per month) allows you to ask open, probing and clarifying questions to deep dive into any topic of your choice.
3. Pages
Perplexity just launched a feature called Pages that enables you to curate structured reports from a single prompt. It also allows you to specify the knowledge level of your target audience which helps tailor the complexity of the output. I’ve just started to test it out but so far it’s on point.
Bonus
You can switch between different AI models from Claude to Chat GPT (both 4 Turbo and 4o) meaning you can challenge different models on the same questions and evaluate their outputs. So far, I’ve noticed that Claude is better for writing and reviewing whereas ChatGPT is a better research tool.
Whether you’re just starting to dip you toe in, or an experienced LLM user, I encourage you to try out Perplexity.
There is a comprehensive free plan but the Pro plan is where things get serious.
If you want to give it a spin here’s my referral code that gets both of us $10 off the monthly plan.
The media will tell you that AI is coming for your job and that creatives are particularly vulnerable.
I don’t believe this is true in the short term but what I do think is true is that creatives will be replaced by creatives who know how to leverage the power of AI.
