Hello my friends,
Happy New Year and welcome to the first CMMN WLTH of 2022.
Let’s start the new year with a thought exercise:
Why is mental health synonymous with illness when physical health is not.
According to The World Economic Forum, the global cost of mental health through lost productivity, absences and staff turnover is estimated to be around $2.5 trillion annually1. While estimates say that 83% of us will be affected by a mental health crisis in our lifetimes.
Today, we treat mental health like we did physical fitness fifty years ago — only seeking help when something has gone wrong2.
What if we approached our mental wellbeing like our physical fitness; from something that you simply maintain, to an ability you can build and work to improve — “Mental Fitness”.
From the research, there are five axes of mental fitness:
Sleep
Diet
Media diet
Movement
Environment
All linked and compoundable:
Not sleeping well? Start your day with a run or walk.
Feeling fatigued? Get your food allergens checked.
Stressed? Go outside in the sunlight.
Anxiety? Ignore big media and find direct sources (e.g. Twitter or blogs).
This is not a “new year, new me” proclamation but it is a commitment to approach mental wellbeing with the same focus and will as physical wellbeing.
Something to make time for and invest in, not simply maintain.
Let me know your thoughts by sending me a dm on Twitter or by replying directly to this e-mail.

Product
The convergence of sport and Web3 is inevitable. Links DAO is the future of the country club.
A paralyzed man became the first person to compose and send a tweet using a brain-computer interface (bci). Setting a precedent for neural implants.
Programmatic advertising, supply side and agency trading platforms; innovation in ad-tech is relentless. But nothing can beat this marketing genius.
People
If you need an infusion of motivation to start the new year look no further than this conversation with Chris Sacca. From how to raise great kids to applying knowledge from venture capital to save the planet, it’s not one to miss.
A fascinating study on gender attitudes in the workplace. ”Women’s relative earnings and employment increase by 4.4% and 2.9% respectively following the birth of the manager’s first daughter.”
Being fired or being promoted have no impact on emotional wellbeing or life satisfaction. A surprising outcome from a study of 14,000 Australians over 14 years.
Methods
Failure can be fatal to success. This step-by-step framework will help you set goals, action feedback and orientate to overcome your fear.
Commit to start this year off slow and give yourself time to think. The Quiet Place Project is a good place to start.

Out of Office
I’m finding Google and particularly Gmail increasingly annoying with search results and ads biased by trackers.
If you’re passionate about the impending benefits of Web3 then it’s time to start taking your online privacy seriously.
Two changes I’m making:
Search → DuckDuckGo. Blocks advertising trackers and treats your personal information as private.
Email → Protonmail. A secure e-mail service based in Switzerland with no ads.
