Hello my friends,
Continuing an outstanding, albeit unique, summer of sport, the Tokyo Paralympics got underway last week.
Unsurprisingly, the stands will remain empty, but the promise of increased television exposure and interest from sponsors has elevated equity between disabled and non-disabled athletes.
Whether it’s the result of an audience stuck at home looking for entertainment or a cultural shift, cultivated by Gen Z and social media, the outcome could be game changing for the overlooked and underrepresented.
This Olympic year delivered on greater diversity and increased equity:
Of the 11,000 athletes that competed, 49% were women (46.5% Paralympics) vs. 45% in Rio.
And Paralympians, for the first time, receive equal prize money to their Olympic peers (previously one-fifth).
While there is still a significant distance to go in the relay race of progress — it’s now up to Paris and L.A. to carry the baton forward.
