Hello my friends,

Is it just me or are we having fewer big ideas?

If you’re working remotely it could be a symptom of:

  1. Not being able to collaborate in person reducing the psychological safety that ideas need to propagate.

  2. Virtual collaboration making it easier to share an opinion. Without visible body language, proving you’re engaged in a meeting, encourages verbal and written (using the chat function) proof.

More than ever, sharing ideas is difficult, sharing an opinion not so much.

If this sounds familiar then Sir Jony Ive’s commencement speech is exactly what you need to hear right now ↓

In summary:

  • Opinions are not ideas. Opinions are not as important as ideas.

  • Be truly open, inquisitive, and curious.

  • Wanting to learn is far more important than being right.

You’re being given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to reset, reinvent and rebuild.

Think big and don’t let anyone devalue your ideas.

More on this below ↓

Let’s get into it,

— Andy

Product

  • Brian Chesky’s description of how he and Joe Gebbia came up with and launched Airbnb will encourage you to keep pushing your ideas forward. It’s a long one but the first fifteen minutes are gold.

  • Turn “That will never work” into “How can I help”. Paul Graham on embracing crazy new ideas.

  • 98% less water, 50% less fertilizer and it doesn’t destroy the land. Vertical farming is already the future of food production.

People

  • “Gamechanger” is an overused term but not in this case. Steph Curry has relentlessly challenged conventional wisdom on the three-pointer.

  • There are few positives that come from a global pandemic. But as we emerge from quarantine, starting over could be one of them.

  • Intensified emotions affect decision-making. But, don’t assume that it’s a bad thing.

Methods

  • Build breadth in your career. An actionable framework on developing “Adjacent Skills”.

  • The return to global travel looks imminent. A professional security and risk consultant shares some tools for managing anxiety both home and away.

  • Struggling for perspective? The 10-10-10 process provides depth of field on difficult decisions.

Out of Office

Airbnb reported Q1 earnings last week and this caught my eye ↓

Got me thinking that the future could be bouncing between short-term rentals, working remotely, experiencing life.

Here’s hoping.
